More info about this coffee

Nicaragua Segovia is a story of delicious Organic, Fair Trade coffee and environmental sustainability arising from benign neglect. In the late 20th century, while many coffee producing countries in the Americas were rationalizing their production (read: deforesting and replacing heirloom coffee trees with new higher yielding sun tolerant varieties), Nicaragua was tragically mired in a bloody civil war. The resulting economic collapse left an absence of capital and markets for Nicaraguan coffee farmers to follow suit.

As peace was restored and US trade restrictions were lifted (that's as far we'll get into the politics) Nicaraguan coffee farmers were able to slowly rebuild their farms and rejoin the international coffee trade with their shade trees intact.

At the beginning of the 21st century, just as the specialty coffee industry was rediscovering Nicaragua's full bodied, inherently sweet coffees (slow ripening under shade cover) and the prospect of being rewarded for years of perseverance in the form of higher prices was at hand, prices on the New York and London exchanges were beginning a grim descent to poverty-inducing inflation-adjusted historic lows—commonly referred to in the industry as “The Coffee Crisis" (how's that for timing). Forced to regroup again, farmers were encouraged to add value by organizing into specialty-grade focused cooperatives and fulfill the requirements for Organic and Fair Trade certifications.

Amazingly, this story has a happy ending.  Prodecoop—our principal partner in Nicaragua and exemplar among many fine Nicaraguan cooperatives—by diligently executing the plan has steadily increased the price paid for its coffee, using the proceeds to bringing improved living standards to its growing membership and fund programs in medical care, education and environmental sustainability. We are pleased to bring a piece of their dedication and hard work to your table.
