More about this coffee

This lot and the one to follow later in 2022 are the product of two small associations that work under our long time partner in Nicaragua PRODECOOP's umbrella.  These coffees produced by 15 de Septiembre and Jose Alfredo Zeledon cupped so well that they were kept separate and earned a higher price premium for the farmers.

Co-op JAZ was founded by only 35 smallholders in 1996, and has grown to now include farmers from 12 different communities in the area. A strong emphasis is up on electing leadership and representatives who are diverse and reflect the entire community: Its leadership structure includes a board of directors, supervisory board, a commission for education and promotion of cooperativism, and a gender commission. There is also a small extension service of 4 volunteer members, who provide technical assistance and agricultural guidance to the community; the extension service is run by a daughter of one of the producer members.

The co-op dues are used to provide members with tools, training, genetic material for coffee, a demonstration plot for educational purposes, and more.

Nicaragua FTO SEGOVIA is sourced from family-owned farms organized around Promotora de Desarrollo Cooperativo de Las Segovias (PRODECOOP), an umbrella cooperative operating in the departments of Estelí, Madriz and Nueva Segovia, Nicaragua. PRODECOOP operates a centrally located dry mill facility and cupping lab where coffee is received, processed and selected for export. In addition to marketing coffee internationally, PRODECOOP provides producers with financing, training, and technical assistance to improve coffee quality. PRODECOOP also strives to improve the quality of life for coffee producers and their families through projects promoting income diversification and education.
