More Info About This Coffee:

This coffee comes straight from women owned and/or managed farms within the larger CODECH cooperative located near the municipality of Concepcion Huista in the department of Huehuetenango. First, this is fresh, top-cupping coffee from the 2023 Crop. Secondly, and depending on your world view maybe most importantly, it is another coffee—like Peru Apu and Mexico El Triunfo--we are part of that goes beyond fair trade in scope and price, directly empowering our partners at source: dedicated artisan coffee growers. In this case, the women who created this lot voted to split the above fair trade price premium between their farms and a women’s health workshop focusing on infant mortality.

More Info About This Cooperative:

CODECH was founded in 1998, as representatives of the member organizations were in search of alternative development programs for the community in Concepcion Huista. It is now 476 members strong, with a focus on the participation of women in society and the workforce. Gregorio, the general manager of CODECH, is also pushing for farmers to renovate their farms. He believes they could be producing about three times their current volume on average.

The organization's organic certification is not only indicative of its commitment to being environmentally friendly, but also to be independent from transnationals which produce fertilizers. They are also working towards independence from the price of oil (used in fertilizers). Gregorio also believes that there is a growing market for organic products and wants to meet that demand.
